Works great for my purposes. Since the phone is Japanese, some of the regionlocked functions do not work (eg. weather). Custom apps have to be sideloaded on - Y2Kphones already sideloads an app store onto the phone, but I mostly sideloaded the apps I want as separate APKs from my computer.
Using custom apps built for more powerful phones drains the battery quicker than it would otherwise last - it can still go a couple days without charging. The apps I use that work fine are:
- Discord
- Whatsapp
- QUIK SMS (normal SMS does not chain messages)
- Fennec (Firefox - pretty slow and prone to crashing)
- TT9 (phone's default keyboard does not support traditional T9 typing, which is much quicker than the alternative)
- NewPipe (youtube client)
Camera is better than my old phone, which isn't saying much. SD card is not recognised by the phone despite being reformatted multiple times. Maybe it's the size or brand of the SD card, but it doesn't matter enough to me to fix it right now - it works fine without. It's great to use and makes people laugh. Would recommend!
I was worried at first because the shipping tracker did not update for 2 weeks. After that time, the phone was delivered, so I was happy.
If you want to run heavy apps like Instagram, Maps (google suite does not work on the phone allegedly) or TikTok you might have problems. But for staying in contact with people, I love it.
When I first saw Y2KPhones back in 2023/2024, I was very skeptical at first. I really wanted to get a flip phone though, especially one that had Android. The aesthetic fits me perfectly.
When the phone finally arrived, I was surprised to see that it was already debugged and in English -- I appreciate the seller for doing that!! The phone works perfectly! It even works on my carrier (T-Mobile in a big city on the East Coast of the US), so I'm excited to start using it more once I finish tweaking it.
I can't wait to see if Japan makes more phones like these, or we'll see more of a resurgence regarding these phones!
Ordered to Germany, took around 12 days to arrive. Cant even tell that its refurbished because it looks factory new. Love it!!
